Arc Flash Study | Arc Flash Hazard Analysis
An Arc Flash Study is an analysis of an electrical distribution system to determine by calculation the worst-case arc flash hazard that personnel could be exposed to if an arc flash event occurred. Once the Arc Flash hazard has been quantified, control measures can be put in place to mitigate the hazard.

Electrical Arc Hazards
- Arc Blast Impacts Sound - The heating of the air and vaporization of metal creates a pressure wave that can damage hearing and cause memory loss (from concussion) and other injuries.
- Falls - Electric shocks and arc blasts can cause falls, especially from ladders or unguarded scaffolding.
- Arc Flash Burns - Arc Flash plasma with temperature as high as 35,000 0F. Arc flash can cause severe skin burns.
An arc flash event can be initiated in a number of ways, some examples are
- Operation of switchgear
- Opening/closing of access panels (hinged and fixed)
- Testing and Fault Finding
- Working in proximity to live conductive parts/live working
- Isolation errors e.g. mislabeling of equipment, unfamiliarity with site/equipment,incorrect documentation.
- Errors related to competency

The following typical data are considered in Arc Flash Study as derived from IEEE 1584.
- Distance Exponent Factor
- Bus Gap the dimension between adjacent phases at a possible arc point
- Working Distance, the distance between the closest possible arc point and the head and body of a person conducting work.
